A leading retail company approached Softellar to help them migrate their existing Alteryx workflows to the Google Cloud Platform (GCP). The client wanted to leverage the benefits of cloud services’ performance, scalability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness to improve their data processing capabilities and accelerate decision-making.

Challenge

The main challenge in this project was to ensure a seamless migration of Alteryx workflows to GCP Big Query without affecting the client’s day-to-day operations. The workflows were complex, with multiple data sources and dependencies, making it difficult to maintain and scale on-premise infrastructure. Additionally, the Customer complained of low performance for the current volume of the data which didn’t allow to update the data frequently, and that affected their business operations.

Solution

To start, Softellar’s team carefully assessed the Customer’s existing Alteryx workflows to determine the most efficient way to migrate them to Google Cloud Platform. We identified potential issues and bottlenecks early on in the process, allowing us to proactively address them before they became major problems. The team also identified dependencies between the workflows and the data to prepare a migration sequence. After that in collaboration with the Customer the structure of Google Cloud Big Query project, datasets, tables, views, procedures and functions were defined.

Next, we began the actual migration process, carefully migrating each workflow one by one. We tested the queries and validated the data against original workflows thoroughly to ensure that it worked properly in the new environment, and made some optimizations along the way, such as clustering and partitioning.

Throughout the migration process, we kept the Customer informed and up-to-date on our progress, and worked closely with their team to ensure that the migration was completed smoothly and with minimal disruption.

Result & Business Value

The migration to Google Cloud Platform enabled the Customer to process their data faster and more accurately, improving their decision-making capabilities. With GCP’s scalability, the Customer could easily handle peak loads without investing in additional hardware. This resulted in cost savings and improved operational efficiency. With cloud performance, the Customer could update the data more frequently which resulted in more accurate data for business decisions.
