Loma Lux Laboratories is a California-based company founded in 1990, specializing in the development of natural skin care and wellness products. With a strong commitment to dermatological research, the company has grown a loyal customer base across the United States. As digital sales channels became increasingly important, Loma Lux needed to modernize its infrastructure to ensure a reliable and scalable online presence.
Loma Lux Laboratories was running its core digital infrastructure - including the corporate website, internal services, and databases - on a legacy on-premises server environment. This setup led to recurring performance issues, limited scalability, and unacceptable levels of downtime, especially during traffic spikes or maintenance periods.
These limitations negatively impacted online customer experience, slowed down internal workflows, and posed a risk to the company's continued eCommerce growth. The leadership team recognized the need to shift toward a cloud-native architecture to ensure high availability, faster performance, and long-term scalability.
Softellar partnered with Loma Lux Laboratories to design and execute a tailored cloud migration strategy. The objective was to transition all critical infrastructure components to Microsoft Azure, ensuring business continuity and performance gains without disrupting ongoing operations.
The project began with a comprehensive assessment of the current on-premises setup, followed by the design of a hybrid network architecture. This included configuring Azure Virtual Networks and a Site-to-Site VPN Gateway to maintain secure communication between on-premises systems and the cloud during the migration phase.
Softellar then executed the migration in several controlled stages:
To ensure operational readiness, Softellar conducted detailed QA, load testing, and validation before go-live. The project concluded with team training and documentation handover, empowering Loma Lux's internal IT staff to maintain and scale their cloud environment independently.
To ensure a smooth transition without disrupting ongoing operations, Softellar established a Site-to-Site VPN connection between Loma Lux's on-premises network and their newly provisioned Azure Virtual Network (VNet). This hybrid setup allowed for phased migration, secure resource access, and real-time system testing during the transition. Network segmentation within Azure ensured that internal systems and public-facing services were logically isolated, adhering to security best practices.
The company's customer-facing PHP web application was migrated to Azure App Service, a fully managed platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offering. This eliminated the need for manual server patching, reduced deployment complexity, and enabled auto-scaling during traffic peaks. Azure's built-in diagnostics and performance monitoring features allowed for proactive issue detection and faster resolution - which was previously impossible with the legacy on-prem setup.
Softellar migrated the company's legacy relational databases to Azure SQL Database, leveraging Microsoft's managed database-as-a-service (DBaaS). The team used Data Migration Assistant and Azure Database Migration Service to assess compatibility, reduce downtime, and securely migrate data. The new environment offered benefits such as automated backups, geo-redundancy, point-in-time restore, and built-in threat detection - improving reliability and aligning with industry compliance needs.
Loma Lux had several lightweight custom background services (e.g., inventory sync, internal notification handlers) that were not tightly coupled to the web application. Softellar containerized these services using Docker, ensuring they could be run consistently across dev/test/prod environments. They were then deployed via Azure Container Instances (ACI) - a serverless container hosting solution that avoids the overhead of managing full Kubernetes clusters, while still offering elasticity and rapid startup.
To support long-term sustainability of the new cloud environment, Softellar prepared detailed documentation and conducted hands-on training sessions with the Loma Lux IT team. These sessions covered monitoring (using Azure Monitor and App Insights), cost optimization strategies, identity management (via Azure Active Directory), and operational best practices for maintaining high availability and data security in the cloud.
Softellar used a structured, low-risk migration strategy aligned with Azure's best practices:
By migrating to Microsoft Azure, Loma Lux Laboratories was able to eliminate infrastructure bottlenecks and boost the performance of its digital channels. The website now runs faster, handles increased traffic without failure, and offers a smoother experience to customers. Internally, the team benefits from more reliable systems, easier access to services, and reduced maintenance overhead.
"Our migration to the cloud was made seamless and efficient thanks to the expertise and support of the team at Softellar. Their attention to detail and thorough planning ensured a smooth transition, and we were up and running all the time."
